Project Overview:
"Whiplash", directed by Damien Chazelle, is a critically acclaimed film that follows Andrew Neiman, an aspiring jazz drumming student trying to rise to the top of his elite music conservatory. Terence Fletcher, the school's infamous music professor known for his intense and often brutal teaching methods, is intrigued by Andrew's passion and recruits him to the conservatory's top jazz ensemble. Using a clip from the movie, I created a kinetic typography piece that utilizes motion graphics and expressive type to convey the dialogue's emotion and tone.
Ideation:
The conversation shown is a lecture between Fletcher and Andrew in the music room. Fletcher's voice is loud and booming with rage, while Andrew is startled and weak. I wanted to show this difference in personality and emotion with the size and animation of each of the character's lines. Fletcher's are larger, more snappy and "in your face", while Andrew's is smaller and less confident. Parts of the video also serve as a reminder that this argument takes place in the music room, such as the music sheet and staff graphic.
** Warning for strong language**
PROCESS:
The process began first with a storyboard to plan out the events of the video. Not everything featured on the sketch is seen in the final clip, but it serves as the first concept.
